Perplexity Computer vs Claude Cowork for Teams

Perplexity Computer and Claude Cowork both take a multi-step task and return finished work. Perplexity Computer runs in Perplexity's cloud sandbox, routes steps across several vendors' models and bills in credits. Claude Cowork runs Claude in Anthropic's cloud or reaches your own computer through Claude Desktop, and draws on your plan's usage limits. Pick Computer for web research that ends in a deliverable. Pick Cowork when the inputs sit in local files or your company already governs Claude.

ATI Lab builds client automations on Claude and is a member of Anthropic's partner network, so we are not neutral. This page sticks to what Perplexity and Anthropic document on their own sites, checked on 16 October 2026, and has a section on when Perplexity Computer is the better pick.

Is Perplexity Computer built on Claude?

Partly, at least at launch. When Perplexity introduced Computer on 25 February 2026, it said Computer ran Anthropic's Opus 4.6 as its core reasoning engine and handed sub-tasks to other models: Gemini for deep research, Nano Banana for images, Veo 3.1 for video, Grok for quick lightweight tasks and ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall. Perplexity's current enterprise documentation says Computer picks an eligible model for each step, based on plan, effort mode and availability, and falls back to another model if your organization has disabled one.

That changes what the comparison is about. Claude may do part of the thinking in both products, so the model is a weak reason to choose. The real differences are where the agent works, what it can reach, how it is billed and what an admin controls.

Where does each agent do the work?

Perplexity Computer works in the cloud by default. Perplexity's help center describes a personal cloud sandbox with persistent memory, and the enterprise page says each task session gets its own container, separated from your internal network and from other members' sessions. Nothing needs to be installed on the user's machine, which is why it also runs on iOS, Android and the web, and from Slack for Enterprise users.

The exception is Portable Computer, launched on 25 August 2026. It runs the model, orchestrator, scheduler and sandbox on your own hardware: an NVIDIA DGX Spark, or a Windows or Linux PC with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with at least 24 GB of video memory. Local work uses open-weight 27B models and consumes no credits, and steps that need the web or a frontier model go to the cloud only with your permission. Most office laptops do not have that GPU, so for a typical team Computer is a cloud product.

Claude Cowork splits the work differently. According to Anthropic's help center, cloud sessions (in beta) run on Anthropic's servers and keep going after you close the laptop. When a task needs a local folder, your browser or another app on your computer, Claude reaches it through the Claude Desktop app, which has to be open and connected. Desktop app control, which Anthropic calls computer use, is still a research preview.

How do Perplexity credits compare with Claude's usage limits?

Perplexity meters each task, while Claude gives each seat a ceiling. That difference matters more to a budget owner than any feature on the list.

Perplexity Computer spends credits only on Computer tasks; ordinary Perplexity searches stay unlimited. Max subscribers get 10,000 credits a month and consumer Pro plans get no monthly credits, apart from a time-limited one-off bonus. On business plans, Perplexity's credit guide lists 500 credits per seat per month on Enterprise Pro and 15,000 on Enterprise Max, with a shared organization pool that admins can fund on top. Allocations do not roll over. Perplexity does not publish a fixed credit price per task and says consumption varies with task complexity, so the only way to forecast spend is to run your own tasks and read the usage page. When credits run out, active tasks pause and resume once more credits arrive, so nothing is lost.

Claude Cowork has no separate meter. It draws on the same usage limits as the rest of your Claude plan, and Anthropic says agentic tasks use more of that limit than chat. The "Automatically approve" mode uses more again, because Claude runs a safety check on each action. Spend is predictable per seat, but a heavy Cowork user can hit the limit sooner than colleagues who only chat. If you run agents through the API instead of a seat, our guide on tracking and capping token costs per workflow covers how to put a hard budget on each one.

Which admin defaults should you check before a pilot?

Both products are switched on by default for business organizations, so a pilot can start before anyone has reviewed the settings. These are the defaults each vendor documents.

SettingPerplexity Computer (Enterprise)Claude Cowork (Team and Enterprise)
Agent available to membersOn by default; admins can limit it to specific members or disable itOn by default; Enterprise can limit it by group with custom roles, Team is all or nothing
Paying beyond the seat allowanceUsage-based billing is off until an admin accepts the termsExtra usage is billed at API rates on Team; check your Enterprise contract
Running in the cloudAlways (except Portable Computer)On by default for Team, off by default for Enterprise
Connector controlAdmins disable individual connectors for the whole organizationMembers approve write-capable connector tools per task unless an admin allows "Always allow"
MonitoringAudit logs of task runs, connector use and credit consumptionOpenTelemetry events to your SIEM; cloud sessions in the Compliance API
Training on your dataEnterprise data is never used to train Perplexity's modelsCommercial data is not used for training by default

One setting per vendor is easy to misread.

Perplexity: billing off means pilots stop at the seat allowance. Because usage-based billing starts switched off, an Enterprise Pro member has 500 credits for the month, a thirtieth of an Enterprise Max seat. A pilot of long-running tasks on Enterprise Pro can pause mid-month until an admin sets up the pool. Decide before the pilot whether you are testing on Pro or Max seats, or the results will reflect the allowance instead of the product.

Claude: the network allowlist does not cover web tools. Cowork respects your organization's network egress settings for code it runs, but Anthropic's Team and Enterprise guide says those settings do not apply to web fetch, web search, MCP connectors or Claude in Chrome. An admin who locked down egress and assumed Cowork cannot reach the open web should turn off web search and Claude in Chrome separately, in Organization settings.

Perplexity Computer vs Claude Code: which one writes code?

Both can write code, but they are built for different people. Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for software engineers, used in the terminal, the desktop app and IDEs such as VS Code and JetBrains, on an existing repository. Perplexity Computer writes code inside its sandbox to produce a deliverable, such as a working app or a dashboard, and connects to GitHub and Linear. A developer changing a production codebase should compare Claude Code with other coding agents. A product manager who wants a working prototype from a description is closer to Computer's use case.

We run this blog's daily publishing routine in Claude Code rather than in Cowork, because each step has to pass a scripted check before the next one starts and every command must match a fixed permission list. That is a software-style job. Our Claude Cowork vs Claude Code comparison explains where that line sits inside Anthropic's own products.

What are the alternatives to Perplexity Computer?

Within the same category, the main alternatives are Claude Cowork, Microsoft's Copilot Cowork and OpenAI's ChatGPT Work. We compared those three in Claude Cowork vs Copilot Cowork vs ChatGPT, checked against each vendor's documentation on 8 October 2026. In short, Copilot Cowork fits companies that work mainly in Microsoft 365 and already hold Copilot licenses, and ChatGPT Work fits companies that already run ChatGPT Enterprise.

If the reason you are looking elsewhere is privacy, Portable Computer is Perplexity's own alternative: the same agent on your hardware, with no credits for local work. For the wider set of options for keeping data in-house, see our guide to private AI for business.

When is Perplexity Computer the better pick?

We would point a client to Perplexity Computer in these cases:

  • The work is research across many web sources that ends in a document, such as competitor pricing, market scans or news monitoring. Search is Perplexity's core product, and Computer runs parallel web searches and returns cited results.
  • The team wants one agent that can call image and video models as well as text models, without managing separate subscriptions.
  • Users work mostly on phones or in Slack, and nobody wants to install or maintain a desktop app.
  • You want per-member spending limits on agent work, set in one place by an admin, with tasks that pause instead of failing when the limit is reached.

Claude Cowork is the stronger pilot when the inputs are files on employees' computers or in desktop apps, when your company already uses Claude for chat or Claude Code, or when procurement requires the model to run through your own Amazon, Google or Microsoft cloud account. For teams heading toward a company-wide rollout, Claude for business describes how we run a pilot before seats are bought.

Frequently asked questions

Is Perplexity Computer free?

No. Computer needs an active Perplexity subscription and runs on credits. Max includes 10,000 credits a month. Consumer Pro includes no monthly credits, so Pro users buy credits or use a time-limited bonus.

Can Perplexity Computer access files on my computer?

Not in its standard form, which works in a cloud sandbox with files you give it and data from connected apps such as Google Drive, OneDrive and SharePoint. Portable Computer can work with local files, but it needs an NVIDIA DGX Spark or an RTX GPU with at least 24 GB of video memory.

Does Claude Cowork need the desktop app?

No. Cowork runs on the web and on mobile in beta. You need Claude Desktop on macOS or Windows only when a task uses local files, your browser or other apps on your computer.

Which models does Perplexity Computer use?

Computer chooses a model for each step. At launch Perplexity named Claude Opus 4.6 as the core reasoning engine, with Gemini, Grok, ChatGPT 5.2, Nano Banana and Veo 3.1 for specific sub-tasks. Enterprise admins who disable a model remove it from Computer's choices.

Can both run tasks on a schedule?

Yes. Perplexity Computer supports scheduled jobs and triggers on email, calendar and files. Claude Cowork's scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so they work with no device online.

How this article was produced

Written by the ATI implementation team. Product, plan and admin details were checked on 16 October 2026 against Perplexity's help center, blog and Academy pages and against Anthropic's help center, product page and privacy center. Seat prices are left out because both vendors change them often; check the pricing pages before you buy. AI assistance was used in research and drafting; a human owns every claim and recommendation in it.
